Mint condition

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Vino is muddling mint leaves and rum this Thursday to bring you the original Havanese highball: the Mojito! Made from white rum, sugar, lime, sparkling water and mint, this Cuban cocktail’s sweet refreshing blend makes it one of the world’s favorite summer drinks.

The origins of Mojito may be traced back to “El Draque”, a drink made from similar ingredients which was created in the 16th century to honor Sir Francis Drake. More recently, Guarapo, the sugar cane juice commonly drunk in Latin America and often used to make Mojitos is said to have been devised by African slaves working in Cuban sugar cane fields. It was the proliferation of rum and sugar in Cuba that led to the development of sweet, rum-based drinks: some suggest that the Mojito simply evolved from the Daiquiri (Havana’s other favorite cocktail) due to the similar choice of available ingredients.

Just as the Daiquiri is closely associated with Havana’s El Floridita bar, the Mojito gained popularity at La Bodeguita del Medio. Opened by Angel Martinez as Casa Martinez in 1942, this general store was quickly converted into a bar thanks to popular demand for the Mojito. After it was renamed La Bodeguita in 1950 the bar became frequented by the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Neruda and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, whose patronage ensured its landmark status as a focal point of Cuba’s cultural revolution. Today it is a common destination for tourists seeking an authentic Cuban Mojito.

We’ll do our best to provide just that on Thursday evening, when guest mixologist Dave Catania from St. Lucia Distillery will be using Chaiman’s Reserve Finest St. Lucia Rum to create this Cuban classic.

Six Grape Varieties You’ve Never Heard Of

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

At Vino we’ve always had a knack for stumbling upon the next big thing. Our intrepid and inexhaustible probing of some of Italy’s most typical regional wines has led to the unlikely transformation of some of its most obscure grape varieties becoming household names among New York’s adventurous wine drinkers.

Our recent international expansion has given us even more scope to introduce you some of the world’s lesser known wines. Cesanese, Monastrell, Teroldego, Falanghina: if you’ve never heard of these grape varieties do not despair, until a few years ago nobody knew Malbec either. Join us at Vino for an evening of exploration. You may end up leaving with a brand new favorite.

Rivera Tasting

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

At Vino always had a soft spot for Puglia. After all, this slender southern Italian region is the homeland of Vino and I Trulli owner Nicola Marzovilla. For years New Yorkers have flocked to I Trulli to delight in its faithful interpretations of typical dishes from the heel of Italy’s boot. Yet recently it seems Puglia’s excellent wines have begun to garner the kind of attention that’s been long overdue.

One reason behind this reappraisal of the region’s wines is Azienda Vinicola Rivera, an estate which has been in the De Corato family for over a hundred years. Today Sebastiano De Corato and his son Carlo produce a series of wines which puts Rivera at the forefront of Puglia’s wine revival.

Located near Andria in the province of Bari, within the Castel del Monte DOC, Rivera is best-known for its high-quality expressions of the appellation’s classic varieties. Join Chris from Cadet Wines tomorrow afternoon as he pours three of our favorite Rivera wines!

Cocktail Hour: Margarita Tasting

Monday, May 17th, 2010

This week Vino’s Cocktail Hour is heading down Mexico way for some salt-rimmed tequila action south of the border! The Margarita is one of the most famous cocktails in the world and the most requested tequila-based drink in the United States. But to this day theories abound as to the details of the drink’s origin. We can only determine that the Margarita was apparently invented somewhere between Acapulco and Galveston, TX, either before, during or after World War II.

Whichever story you believe, perhaps the most charming surrounds Hollywood icon Rita Hayworth (above). In her early career as dancer, Hayworth, not yet legal to work in bars in California, would regularly cross the border to Tijuana , where she would perform at the Foreign Club under her real name, Margarita Cansino. A popular tourist spot with visitors from Los Angeles at the time, it is here that the young sex symbol is said to have inspired a local bartender.

Join us on Thursday as we mix the classic Margarita, made from tequila, triple sec and lime juice. Vino’s Scott Rosenbaum will be using only the best ingredients, including Milagro Tequila and Luxardo Triplum Triple Sec.

Old World vs. New World

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

You’ll no doubt have heard people use the phrases “Old World” and “New World” to describe wine styles, but what do these terms really mean? Join William Leonard-Lee for an intriguing look at what differentiates “Old” from “New World” wines, as he attempts to separate them into these two camps. Taste selections from some of the world’s top winemaking regions to form a clearer understanding of how terroir and technique can affect the profile of a wine. We will also take an in-depth look at how different treatments to the same grape variety can yield wines of wildly differing attributes. California Merlot and Saint-Émilion? Australian Shiraz vs. Northern Rhône? Taste and decide which side of the winemaking divide these wines lay!

Sidecar Tasting: Hop in this Thursday!

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Vino’s Cocktail Hour continues! Hop in this Thursday when we’ll be mixing Sidecars! Made from Cognac, triple sec and lemon juice, this classic cocktail is generally believed to have been invented shortly after the end of World War I, either in London or Paris (Paris’ Ritz Hotel often claims origin of the drink). Early sources credit Pat MacGarry, the celebrated bartender at Buck’s Club in London, with creating the Sidecar, although David A. Embury suggested the cocktail was devised by an American Army captain stationed in Paris during World War I. According to Embury’s The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks (1948) the drink was named after “the motorcycle sidecar in which the good captain was driven to and from the little bistro where the drink was born and christened.”

Whatever the drink’s origins, the sidecar remains one of the quintessential 20th century cocktails. If your bartender doesn’t know how to make it, you’re definitely in the wrong bar!
