La la love you Bordeaux

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Poor Bordeaux. Seems it gets no respect nowadays. Even the New York Times says it’s lost its cachet with the wine cognoscenti. Balderdash to all that! At Vino, we can’t get enough the old claret. Château La Rame Bordeaux Rouge 2008 provides the perfect counterpoint to those who would argue that Bordeaux has seen better days.

Château La Rame is located in the sub-zone of St. Croix du Mont in Bordeaux, an area that focuses on making sweet botrytized wines that compete with Sauternes which is located just across the Garonne River. However, the area’s best kept secret is that this estate crafts one of Bordeaux’s greatest value reds. That’s because the Armand family which owns the property has spent nearly two generations improving the estate (lowering yields, reducing the amount intervention in the cellar). A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot sourced from 45 year old vines, this wine is well-suited for the Autumn; something in the glass reminds us of dried leaves. How else to sum up this well-balanced rouge? Well, it says a lot that the winemaker considers “serenity” an essential quality (you probably won’t hear that from an Aussie winemaker).

Expert and critic Clive Coates has said previous vintages previous vintages of La Rame show “no lack of balance and elegance.” We couldn’t agree more, Clive. Luckily, the same holds true for the shining 2008. Château La Rame we la la love you.

Monteforche: 4 natural wines from Veneto

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Cement tanks are ideal vessels for the production of natural wines. Alfonso Soranzo (below) understands this and puts the knowledge to great use at his Colli Euganei estate Monteforche.

His farm, all of six hectares, is planted to the classic varieties of this prolific but unheralded zone southwest of Padova in the Veneto. He uses the ubiquitous Pinot Grigio as well as the great Soave variety Garganega and Cabernet Franc, the Loire Valley star that has long been planted in Northeastern Italy. To these three stalwarts he adds a bit of Malvasia Istriana and Merlot. What sets Alfonso apart from his neighbors however, is his devotion to making wine using techniques that allow nature to guide the process from bud break to bottle.

This is where cement comes in. While many of Italy’s largest wine producers still depend on giant cement vats to handle large volume, an increasing number of quality-minded producers including a growing roster of “natural” winemakers have discovered that cement has many properties that are ideal for making wines of great character and purity. When cement is lined with glass or resin it is clean, neutral aromatically, temperature-stable and able to provide the kind of slow oxygenation so valued in wood barrels. Cement is also relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain, allowing producers of limited means to keep prices in a range that won’t limit exposure to fans of progressive winemaking.

Alfonso uses cement tanks to ferment all and age all but one of his wines. His whites all see fermentation with skins present and extended lees contact during aging.

A Texas Pioneer: Tito’s Handmade Vodka

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

It’s long been Vino’s philosophy to stock wines made by people not corporations. With spirits this can sometimes be difficult, but there still exist a slew of family-owned, quality-minded producers. We’ve already highlighted the Pogue family and their excellent bourbon. Today, we’re happy to call your attention to Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

Tito’s is a brand built by a person (not a marketing team) named Tito Beveridge (above). It comes from Austin, Texas where it is pot-distilled six times from a corn wash. The distillery isn’t pretty (though it is Texas’ first legal one) and the packaging is modest, but the vodka is clean and smooth.

It is difficult to articulate the reasons for Tito’s success. In the world of brands like Smirnoff and Absolut, one would assume there’d be no place for a self-made man. Of course, such assumptions dismiss the idea that it’s what’s inside the bottle that counts rather than clever marketing. The fact that people actually enjoy Tito’s contributes to its popularity. It might seem rather simple, but how else to explain the success of this lone star vodka. We just know that we’re proud to carry it.

Ready for a top-up? More Classic Cocktails next Tuesday

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

The cocktail renaissance is upon us. New York has seen a surge in Prohibition-era speakeasies and bartenders who concoct their own signature bitters, but you don’t need a password or a degree in chemistry to mix up some of the classics. In this two hour seminar, Vino’s spirits specialist Scott Rosenbaum (when he pours, he reigns) will recount the colorful history behind such hallmarks as the Martini, Manhattan, Daiquiri, and Sidecar. He’ll then shake ‘em up as he discusses the finer points regarding the importance of fresh juice, good ice, and proper barware. Participants will have a chance to mix their favorite cocktail of the evening. Prepare to be shaken and stirred!

Not so petite: Dorgan Cellars Lodi Petite Sirah 2007

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Try this wine at our free tasting on Friday, September 24, from 5:30-7:30pm!

California is no stranger to fashion, especially when it comes to wine.  Even Hollywood has been known to swing the poles in favor of one grape over another.  But under the surface of these heavyweight contenders, a mighty wine has been rising slow and steady. Dorgan Cellars Lodi Petite Sirah 2007 represents one of the finer examples of a grape that may be starting to push through the outer rim of cult status.

Not to be confused with Syrah, this bold variety (also known as Durif) has a much darker fruit and sturdier finish than its Rhône Valley counterpart.  To some, it can be overbearing, yet there are a growing number of devotees that swear by it. There is even an organization dedicated to its greatness entitled, “PS I Love You”.

Dorgan Cellars sources their grapes in Lodi just south of the Sierra Foothills. Exhibiting classic dark blue and blackberry fruit with an underlying herbal spice character, this Petit Sirah packs a powerful punch that will hold its own with any gamey dish you throw into the ring.
