Monday, May 9th, 2011

Vino is proud to announce that one of Piedmont’s finest winemakers, Gian Luigi Orsolani, will be presenting his wines at a free tasting this Saturday! The Orsolanis have been making wine for generations: today the name is synonymous with Erbaluce — the local grape of Caluso — which Gian Luigi uses to make a fabulous range of white wines… and even a metodo classico! But he doesn’t stop there: the Orsolani label graces such other distinguished wines as a Neretto rosato plus Nebbiolo-based reds! Join Gian Luigi from 3pm to taste the lot with the man himself!

To acknowledge this occasion and the consistent performances of some of our own favorite Italian producers, we’re celebrating Tre Bicchieri winners past and present with a very special free tasting this Saturday. Join us from 3-6pm as we roll out the red carpet for classic wines by Valentini, Castello di Verduno, Cascina Corte, Orsolani, Ronco dei Tassi, I Campi and Conti Zecca.

Meet Franciacorta producer Riccardo Ricci Curbastro

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Vino welcomes Franciacorta producer Riccardo Ricci Curbastro to New York! Join us from 6-7:30pm on Monday, October 25 as Riccardo presents three of his world-class sparkling Franciacorta wines: Brut, Extra Brut and Rose’.

Though wine was made in Capriolo (near Brescia in Lombardy) as far back as the 1800s, the Ricci Curbastro winery was founded by Gualberto Ricci Curbastro in 1967, the same year Franciacorta achieved D.O.C. status.

Ricci Curbastro cultivates 27 hectares of Chardonnay, Pinot Nero and Pinot Bianco vines, which Riccardo and enologist Alberto Musatti source to produce a fresh and elegant take on this prestigious northern sparkler.

Home to eight apartments in converted farmhouses, the estate is also a thriving agriturismo, and even houses a Museum of Agriculture and Wine, the only one of its kind in Franciacorta.

San Gennaro Tasting: Taste over 100 wines next Tuesday!

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Vino may be an international wine store these days, but that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten our Italian roots. Join us this Tuesday as we celebrate the Festa di San Gennaro, New York City’s biggest and longest-running Italian festival. We’ll be pouring over 100 wines from boutique Italian importer Domenico Valentino starting at 6pm. We’ll shut the party down when the wine runs out (or when Vino closes at 9pm — whichever happens first). So avoid the crowds on Mulberry Street and taste the real Italy.

Supertasting!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Faster than a popping Metodo Classico cork! More powerful than aged Barolo! Able to leap several cases of Friulano in a single bound! Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Vinoman! Much like the original man of steel, Vinoman was put on this earth for a reason: to fight for truth and justice the Vino way. Donning red boots and cape, Vinoman dashes around the globe hauling those who commit crimes against wine to jail (or at least reporting them to his favorite wine bloggers). He uses his super strength to smash down the doors of bureacracy and X-ray vision to see what really goes into wines in the cellar. It’s all in a day’s work for Vinoman, who in the evening retires to his Fortress of Solitude for a cool glass of Schiava. Just don’t expose him to new-world oaked Cabernet (that’s his Kryptonite).

Alto Adige: Perfection at its peak

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

This week Vino is celebrating the wines of Alto Adige, in collaboration with the Italian Trade Commission.

Latin and Teutonic culture and language may seem world’s apart, but they co-exist side-by-side in the northern Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige. While Trentino is historically Italian, the northernmost province of Alto Adige (which shares a border with Austria and Switzerland) is officially bilingual, and known as Südtirol to the predominantly German-speaking population.

Many grape varieties thrive in Alto Adige’s Alpine climate, yet the province is so mountainous that only a fraction of the land is available for cultivation. However, consumers are discovering that the challenge of growing vines and a relatively small output has put an emphasis on overall quality. Alto Adige is today responsible for producing some of Italy’s most delightful wines, including fresh summer whites and light, bright reds which are best enjoyed during the summer months.

You can taste five of our favorite wines from Alto Adige this Friday as part of our Monster Tasting:

Köfererhof Kerner Alto Adige Valle Isarco 2008
$30

Castel Sallegg Moscato Giallo 2008
$21

Castel Sallegg Lagrein Rosé 2009
$18

Viticoltori Alto Adige Schiava San Pietro 2009
$15

Castel Sallegg Schiava Bischofsleiten 2009
$20
