The World Cup comes to Vino

Friday, June 11th, 2010

The nineteenth edition of the greatest sports tournament on the planet gets underway today in South Africa! It’s the first time the World Cup has been held on that continent, and for the next four weeks all eyes will be on the world’s finest soccer talents as they jostle on the world stage for football’s biggest prize. It may have garnered slightly less media interest, but the inaugural Vino World Cup taking place simultaneously here on East 27th Street promises to be a no less riveting event!

Some of the top teams competing this summer — including hosts South Africa and holders Italy — are also some of the world’s best winemaking nations. Many of these come face-to-face in the early stages — the results of these games could translate to big savings! We’ll be hooting our virtual vuvuzela on Twitter: follow us for more details and match updates!

Fabio Coser comes to Vino!

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

It’s always a treat when a producer pays a visit to Vino, and this week we’re hosting someone special: Fabio Coser of Ronco dei Tassi!

A multi-award winning producer from the north-eastern Italian region of Friuli, Coser’s Ronco dei Tassi label has established him as a leader in his field. Friuli is perhaps best known for some of Italy’s most avant-garde winemakers, but Fabio bucks that trend by producing a range of wines which typify the area. Ronco dei Tassi’s series of monovarietal whites are exemplary, while the winery’s flagship white blend, Fosarin, is a repeat-winner of the coveted Tre Bicchieri prize. But Coser’s talents don’t stop there: he also produces the Bordeaux-inspired Cjarandon and the rare dessert wine, Picolit, as well as the popular line of Clic wines.

When Fabio told us he’d be making a rare visit to New York this summer, we jumped at the chance to welcome him by throwing a tasting event in his honor! Join Fabio and his son Enrico for a one-off tasting of the complete line-up of Coser family wines!

Spring has sprung!

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Spring has officially sprung, and at I Trulli that can only mean one thing: the return of our Spring Garden Parties!

Since 1994, I Trulli has been a favorite among New York diners not just for its delicious pugliese-inspired dishes and famed all-Italian wine-list, but also for its lush back garden, one of Manhattan’s most unique and secluded outdoor restaurant spaces.

Each week our Spring Garden Party will be themed around a particular region of Italy, giving you the chance to savor local wines and foods as they were meant to be enjoyed. The series begins next Tuesday, May 4, with a celebration of the distinctive flavors of Emilia-Romagna.

Prosciutto di Parma, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Mortadella, Aceto Balsamico: some of Italy’s most exported products hail from this culinary heartland. Such strong specialties require a wine to match, which is where Emilia’s refreshing sparkling wine, Lambrusco, delivers. Yet this oft-overlooked wine region also produces some of the country’s most interesting blends. Sample some of our favorites at I Trulli next Tuesday, each paired with Chef Patti Jackson’s special selection of classic Emilian antipasti!

Wines:
Lambrusco Labrusca Bianco NV Lini
Lambrusco In Correggio Rosé NV Lini
Lambrusco In Correggio Scuro NV Lini
Lambrusco Metodo Classico 2003 Lini
Ageno 2004 La Stoppa
Macchiona 2003 La Stoppa

Chef Patti Jackson’s Antipasto Table:

Chicken Liver Pâté
Parmigiano-Reggiano
Piadine with Spring Vegetables
Asparagus wrapped in Prosciutto di Parma

Vino goes global

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

It’s official: Vino has gone global! We’re happy to say our friends, fans and customers have embraced this new initiative with gusto — now Vino invites you to celebrate the expansion of your favorite wine store!

Over the last few weeks New York City’s #1 Italian wine store has begun looking beyond the peninsula. Tentatively at first: a breezy day-trip across the border for an Austrian white led to an unforgettable weekend in Bordeaux. Soon we were jetting around the globe with trips to South Africa, Australia and Argentina, clocking up air miles to bring you the flavors of the New World. We even extended a layover in California to hail a Cab.

But don’t think we’ve let our incredibly high standards slip. Quite the reverse: the same discerning palate which brought you the best of Italy is helping stock Vino’s shelves with a truly international and expanding selection of world-class wines and spirits.

In fact, we’ve got so many great new wines to taste, we couldn’t fit them into one event! Join us next week for a FREE Grand Tasting held over two consecutive evenings! On Thursday, April 1 and Friday, April 2 representatives from our top distributors will be pouring over twenty classic wines, new discoveries and popular favorites!

Vino’s going green

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Stroll down any New York street in March and you can’t help be aware of the impending St. Patrick’s Day festivities, in which storefronts and bars become awash in a sea of green. This popular holiday is intended as a salute to the city’s Irish heritage, but is too often transformed into a night of student debauchery: while we too love downing 2-for-1 lite beers and sporting a novelty Leprechaun’s hat, we agree there’s nothing particularly Irish about it.

At Vino we choose our drinks carefully: having recently begun carrying non-Italian products on our shelves (including a growing selection of spirits), we’re thrilled to be throwing a real St. Patrick’s Day celebration this year. Join us on Wednesday, March 17 when we’ll be preparing Tom Moore cocktails made from Finian’s Irish Whiskey! A variation on the classic Manhattan, the Tom Moore replaces rye whiskey or Bourbon with Irish whiskey, making it the quintessential Irish-New York drink!

Finian’s Five Provinces Irish Whiskey harkens back to a time when Ireland was comprised of 5 provinces: Connachta, Lagin, Mide, Mumu, and Ulaid. This Irish-owned Cooley distillery produces a whiskey made from crystal clear mountain water and the finest Irish malted barley. An extended distillation process results in a rich, smooth and uncommonly clean whiskey.

Tom Moore Cocktail
1 3/4 oz. Finian’s Irish Whiskey
3/4 oz. Sweet Vermouth
1 dash Angostura Bitters
Serve in a 4 1/2 oz. cocktail glass

A Sicilian Feast at I Trulli

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

The origins of La Festa di San Giuseppe date back to the middle ages, when at the end of a severe drought Sicilians prepared a lavish feast in honor of their patron saint. A San Giuseppe banquet is still enjoyed today by Sicilians, Italian-Americans and lovers of Italian food and heritage.

As a child in Puglia, I Trulli owner Nicola Marzovilla grew up with two uncles named Giuseppe, with whom he would enjoy typical fried zeppole and other specialties on this popular holiday. Who better to host his own San Giuseppe celebration?

Join us on Thursday, March 18, as we explore the culinary and cultural traditions of San Giuseppe. Chef Patti Jackson’s delicious menu will feature some of the Marzovilla family’s favorite San Giuseppe dishes, paired with Sicily’s classic local wines. And in true San Giuseppe style, we’ll even be presenting our own tavola di San Giuseppe, a decorative altar featuring a bounteous spread of typical breads and cakes!
