Top floor wines, basement price: take a bottle home today for just $8

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Eight is especially fine when it’s the number of dollars you pay for a good bottle of wine. At Vino we promise that everything in the store is well worth drinking and that goes for $8.00 as well as $80.00. We poked around the boot a good bit the last few years and found a few remarkable wines that taste great, serve very well at the table and represent remarkable value. Take for example these two:

Massoferrato Rosato 2009
$8
I Trulli and Vino owner Nicola Marzovilla is proud to bring you his first-ever rosé. 100% Sangiovese grown on the Massoferrato estate in Impruneta is expertly vinified by legendary Collio producer Fabio Coser. Light, clear vermillion, clean, subtle strawberry and peppery thyme aromas and fresh, succulent acidity make for an ideal everyday wine you can enjoy year round.

La Molara Naif Rosso 2006
$8
We love Aglianico at Vino so it brings us great pleasure to offer you this well-made version at an awesome price. Sourced from vineyards near Luogosano in the Province of Avellino, Naif benefits from the same volcanic soil that gives such unique character to the wines of Taurasi. Concentrated blackberry aromas laced with smoky minerality and herbal notes balance firm tannins and bright acidity.

Three Italian Rosatos, each under $20

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Wines called rosé are typically made by allowing limited contact between red grape skins and grape must immediately after the crush. The process is fairly simple and the resulting wines, if made correctly, offer wine drinkers a versatile and often inexpensive third option when the choice of white or red just won’t do.
Italian rosé, or rosato, first emerged as a popular wine in Puglia where hot weather and plentiful red-wine grapes made the wine a going concern. As wine drinkers warmed to the style, dusty pink and dry with delicate berry and floral aromas, winemakers in other parts of Italy took notice and began to add rosato to their lists of labels.

Today, rosé is made all over the boot from scores of different grape varieties and both the Italian and international markets have embraced the wines. Sales of rosé spike in the summer months of course, as red wine drinkers search for lighter more refreshing choices but here at Vino we like to advise folks to drink rosé year round. Here are three of our favorites.

Negroamaro Rosato, IGT Salento 2009, Bacco, Puglia
$13
From where it all began, the team at Conti Zecca briefly macerates 100% Leverano-grown negroamaro in temperature-controlled stainless steel to produce a light-bodied rosé with fresh floral and strawberry notes and delicate tannins.

Massoferrato Rosato, IGT Toscana 2009, Massoferrato, Toscana
$13

From Vino-owner Nicola Marzovilla’s estate just south of Florence, this charming rosé is made of 100% Sangiovese by Collio expert Fabio Coser. Zesty acidity and medium body make for a robust but balanced rosé that is a great compliment to grilled meats and vegetables.

Lagrein Rosé, Alto Adige DOC 2009, Castel Sallegg, Alto Adige
$18
With its deep color, meaty tannins and herbaceous aromatic profile Lagrein would seem an unlikely candidate for great rosé but we’ve seen plenty and Castel Sallegg’s is one of the best. Firmer than the negroamaro or sangiovese and with more pronounced “red wine” aromas, this sub-Alpine selection holds its own with aged cheeses and heavier meat dishes. A screw cap makes it great for a party or a picnic in the park.

A Sicilian Feast at I Trulli

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

The origins of La Festa di San Giuseppe date back to the middle ages, when at the end of a severe drought Sicilians prepared a lavish feast in honor of their patron saint. A San Giuseppe banquet is still enjoyed today by Sicilians, Italian-Americans and lovers of Italian food and heritage.

As a child in Puglia, I Trulli owner Nicola Marzovilla grew up with two uncles named Giuseppe, with whom he would enjoy typical fried zeppole and other specialties on this popular holiday. Who better to host his own San Giuseppe celebration?

Join us on Thursday, March 18, as we explore the culinary and cultural traditions of San Giuseppe. Chef Patti Jackson’s delicious menu will feature some of the Marzovilla family’s favorite San Giuseppe dishes, paired with Sicily’s classic local wines. And in true San Giuseppe style, we’ll even be presenting our own tavola di San Giuseppe, a decorative altar featuring a bounteous spread of typical breads and cakes!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Taste Nicola Marzovilla's Massoferrato plus other Tuscan favorites and save 20%!

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The first week of Vino’s holiday sale concludes this evening with a very special tasting! Each day this week we’ve featured a different Tuscan producer; today we finish our tour of the region with a special wine which is particularly close to our hearts.

Massoferrato is the first wine made from grapes grown on Nicola Marzovilla’s Tuscan estate (above). The Vino and I Trulli owner purchased the property in Impruneta, south of Florence, in the 1990s, with a view to one day making his own wine.

Italian-born Nicola planted seven acres of the classic Tuscan variety, Sangiovese (below). After waiting several years for his vines to mature, he decided to bottle his first vintage in 2008.

Nicola was assisted by expert Sangiovese winemaker Massimo Carpini from the Podere Casanova winery; the wine was fermented in stainless steel before spending time in custom-made 20-hectoliter barrels of Slavonian oak. Named Massoferrato (“iron boulder”) after the iron-rich rock (below) which overlooks the vineyards, the wine is classified Rosso Toscano IGT.

The first cases of Massoferrato arrived in New York just last month, and has already become a popular favorite on the wine list at I Trulli, and with customers at Vino. Nicola proudly presented his labor of love to excited guests last month at a dinner held at I Trulli, where the new wine was paired with a suitably rustic whole roasted wild boar.

If you missed out on that occasion, tonight is another chance to taste and discuss the wine with Nicola himself. We’ll also be pouring some of our other favorite bottles from Tuscany! Join Nicola Marzovilla at Vino tonight from 5:30-7:30pm!
