Meet Al from Alsace: Albert Seltz Riesling Reserve 2009

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

We admit it. We, at Vino, are a lucky bunch. We get to taste wine regularly, interact with knowledgeable customers, and mix free cocktails for the neighborhood. One of our greatest privileges is being able to meet winemakers when they visit New York. Recently, a vigneron from Alsace stopped by and we’re glad he did. His energy was electric, his personality a bit eccentric, and his wines racy and lively. His name is Albert Seltz and we’re now proud to offer his Riesling Reserve 2009.

The affable Albert Seltz crafts some incredible whites out of his Mittelbergheim-based winery in Alsace. Seltz, the 14th generation owner and winemaker, took over from his father in 1980 when he was only 19 years old. Immediately, he reduced the production by two thirds, reduced the yields, and converted to strictly sustainable organic agricultural methods. In the cellar he practices minimal intervention, employing indigenous yeast fermentation (when possible) and sur lie aging.

While the majority of his production is Sylvaner (he was instrumental in the NIAO’s recent decision to allow a Grand Cru Zotzenberg Sylvaner), Seltz makes about 1,200 cases of this zippy, refreshing Riesling. Fermented dry with nary a touch oak, this Riesling displays all the vibrancy one associates with Alsace’s finest.

La la love you Bordeaux

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Poor Bordeaux. Seems it gets no respect nowadays. Even the New York Times says it’s lost its cachet with the wine cognoscenti. Balderdash to all that! At Vino, we can’t get enough the old claret. Château La Rame Bordeaux Rouge 2008 provides the perfect counterpoint to those who would argue that Bordeaux has seen better days.

Château La Rame is located in the sub-zone of St. Croix du Mont in Bordeaux, an area that focuses on making sweet botrytized wines that compete with Sauternes which is located just across the Garonne River. However, the area’s best kept secret is that this estate crafts one of Bordeaux’s greatest value reds. That’s because the Armand family which owns the property has spent nearly two generations improving the estate (lowering yields, reducing the amount intervention in the cellar). A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot sourced from 45 year old vines, this wine is well-suited for the Autumn; something in the glass reminds us of dried leaves. How else to sum up this well-balanced rouge? Well, it says a lot that the winemaker considers “serenity” an essential quality (you probably won’t hear that from an Aussie winemaker).

Expert and critic Clive Coates has said previous vintages previous vintages of La Rame show “no lack of balance and elegance.” We couldn’t agree more, Clive. Luckily, the same holds true for the shining 2008. Château La Rame we la la love you.

Mammoth Tasting, next Friday

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Our monthly tasting blow-out returns next week, and this time we’re getting cozy with some not-quite prehistoric selections. Since the dawn of time (well, almost) man has sought good wine to bring back to his cave dwelling (or swanky Manhattan pad). With that in mind we’ve spent what sometimes feels like a billion years roaming the Earth in search of the best this planet has to offer, without rummaging among those fossilized vintages. They may not be quite endangered species, but you should still hurry up and get them before they’re gone forever! Stay tuned for more information on featured wines…

Hot Aglianico at a cool, cool price!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

naima blog1Get hip to this swell deal on the collectable Naima!

Admirers of Aglianico need look no further for the best deal you’ll find this weekend. Vino has just two cases of the 2004 vintage of Naima, De Conciliis’ renowned Aglianico, and we’re making it available at a very special price. Recognized internationally as one of Campania’s top wineries, the De Conciliis estate is positioned in the heart of Cilento, the area comprising the central and southern portions of the province of Salerno. Blessed with one of Italy’s most desirable climates, the family grows its Aglianico on high-altitude vineyards facing south-west towards the Mediterranean. The wine is aged for a year in barriques, a year in tonneaux, six months in steel and a further six in the bottle before its release. The result is a full-bodied, modern expression of southern Italy’s signature grape.

Bruno De Conciliis and his family are huge jazz fans, and are quick to make connections between the art of music and winemaking: “Jazz music is our way of making wine,” they say. “We improvise the melodies of the grapes and make a unique performance of every harvest.” Indeed, Naima is a direct reference to the John Coltrane composition of the same name, written for his then wife, Juanita Naima Grubb. The track can be found on the sax legend’s groundbreaking 1959 album Giant Steps (Atlantic). “Naima” and Naima: is there no greater combo?

Je suis un rock star

Faux-French popsters’ transatlantic “tourette” arrives in la grande pomme! Photographed by James Taylor

Nous Non Plus on-stage at the Mercury Lounge, New York City, February 9, 2009.

At Vino we love our music almost as much as we love our wine, so when there’s a hot gig in town we don’t require much encouragement to don tight jeans and leather and join the Brooklyn Lager-sipping hipsters’ sweaty ranks. Last night was the turn of our friend Jeremy Parzen, whose band Nous Non Plus was appearing downtown at the Mercury Lounge. The pseudo-French new wave rockers had just returned from a successful mini tour of France, which included the official launch in Paris of their brand new record, Ménagerie.

fgshh

Everyone's favorite Telecaster-wielding wine blogger Jeremy Parzen (who goes by the rock star alias Cal d'Hommage) pours a hidden bottle of Bollinger for thirsty fans.

Led by willowy Parisian native Céline Dijon and faux-Frenchman Jean-Luc Rétard (real name Dan Crane), the band tore through a string of ’60s-inspired sing-along punk-pop tracks plucked from their latest release and eponymously-titled debut album. The sexy show included the single “Loli”, the video to which (directed by Greg Harrison), has been on heavy rotation in this office all week:

Afterwards we shared a beer and caught up with Jeremy, whose charmed life of wine, food, music and travel is documented with an impressive dedication through his action-packed blog, Do Bianchi. (Jeremy reviews the NYC show plus a pre-gig bite at Centovini here.) Since leaving New York for La Jolla, California, Jeremy recently followed his heart to Austin, Texas, to indulge his passions in the Lone Star state’s most rock’n'roll town. Keep it weird, JP.

The stylish trio of Jeremy, keyboard player Maurice Chevrolet (Ryan Williams), and Jean-Luc captured shortly before a post-gig visit to Ray's Pizza.

Rolling Stone reviews… Lini Lambrusco!

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

All the news that fits: Italian edition of rock’n'roll magazine digs “lo Scuro

We all know that Lini 910 is the most rock’n'roll wine producer out there. What we didn’t know was that Italy’s rock press is catching on and getting hip to Lambrusco. Last year, Emilian musician Luciano Ligabue talked about the importance of Lambrusco and cited the “Cantine Lini” in Sulla sua strada, the Correggio-born rocker’s collection of tales from the road. Now Lini is receiving praise in none other than Rolling Stone magazine! Each month in the Italian edition of the classic rock-lovers’ bible, restaurateur and TV personality Filippo Polidori enjoys pairing a bottle of vino with a favorite LP, in a column called “Degustazioni”. Yesterday I finally got my hands on a copy of the February 2008 issue (yes, in Italy RS is a monthly). The cover star is Sicilian singer-dancer-actor-comedian-TV/radio personality (the Italians call him a “showman”) Rosario Fiorello, who appears in an affectionate pastiche of jazz-rock pioneer Donald Fagen’s 1982 solo album The Nightfly.

Rosario Fiorello, or simply "Fiorello" to many,

The multi-talented Rosario Fiorello, known simply as Fiorello to many, was born in Catania in 1960.

Polidori discusses how Lambrusco has finally begun to sell outside Emilia Romagna, mentioning how it is now the best-selling wine in Brazil. Though the best explanation of Lambrusco’s popularity abroad comes from photographer Oliviero Toscani. “Lambrusco is the true Italian wine,” he says. “It’s like Marcello Mastroianni. Who better to represent Italy? It has that real look of an Italian and instead of being proud we act embarrassed, just because it isn’t trendy… It’s absurd. It’s Lambrusco that’s trendy, not the other wines! If Italians were really chic they’d understand.”

"I've got plenty of java and Chesterfield Kings..." All Donald's missing is a bottle of Lambrusco.

Polidori then goes on to describe his feelings for Lini’s Lambrusco Scuro. “From the first instant you pour it into the glass you realize you’re in the company of something good, starting with that brilliant ruby color and aroma of cherry and strawberry. This wine doesn’t require any introductions in order to appreciate it: it’s a eulogy to the greatness of simplicity.”

So what record does Polidori choose to listen to while drinking Lini? The perhaps surprising answer is Born To Run, Bruce Springsteen’s chrome-wheeled, fuel-injected magnum opus from 1975. “I chose an album that has two souls: Rock and Folk. For me Springsteen is the right person and Born To Run is the right soundtrack.” Hard to disagree, although I’ve always felt Bruce (and Lini for that matter) goes well with just about anything…

"Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to drink Lambrusco."

You can read Filippo Polidari’s complete “Degustazioni” column as featured in the February 2008 Rolling Stone, here (a full translation will follow later). Meanwhile, if you have any other thoughts regarding wine-music pairings please let us know — right now I’m considering popping open some Labrusca Bianco and dusting off my copy of the White Album
