Graham Beck “The Game Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Graham Beck Chardonnay-Viognier 2009

So it isn’t often you see the host nation of the World cup get blown out in the first round, but one has to admit, aside from the team’s valiant effort on the pitch, being a courteous keeper of the global community focuses one’s attention towards its other fine attributes. Most notably, you guessed it… their impressive world class wines.

Independent entrepreneur and wine maker Graham Beck epitomizes the enterprising spirit of South Africa’s modern winemakers. Having in the past established himself as a major player in the South African coal mining industry, Mr. Beck has also found great success in horse breeding as well as running his diverse wine operations. And the diversity doesn’t stop there. Their firm commitment to biodiversity has led Graham Beck to be only the second winery in the Cape to be awarded Biodiversity Champion Status, an accolade not to be taken lightly.

Since 1983, this three generation estate has grown to encompass vineyards in four different farms in the Western Cape Province, giving them a wide range of unique micro-climates and soils to grow their vast selection of wines. Their Chardonnay-Viogner is fresh and lively, with just the right balance of stainless steel with small portion of staved chardonnay. The  “Game Reserve” Cabernet hails from their benchmark Robertson Estate on an actual Game Reserve. Vines are planted on red Karoo soil, the same soil where animals feed on the local fynbos.

If that is not impressive enough, Graham Beck’s array of awards will show you without a doubt that in the world of wine, this man is truly a global player. Try one of these selections and sing a toast to the host. Bafana Bafana!

Take home six of the best this Thanksgiving

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Let Vino choose your wines this holiday season

Norman Rockwell's vision of Thanksgiving did not include wine, but there's no reason why yours shouldn't.

Norman Rockwell's vision of Thanksgiving probably didn't include wine, but there's no reason why yours shouldn't.

For many Americans, Thanksgiving means turkey, pumpkin pie and the Dallas Cowboys. But while we all enjoy eating with the family and watching football, the wine lover in us is sometimes left dissatisfied. Invariably wine is given little consideration at Thanksgiving, such is the epic nature of this autumnal feast — many find the challenge of pairing wines with stuffing, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce simply too daunting a task. Which is why Vino is here to help. While we admit that choosing Thanksgiving wines is a tricky affair to get right, this year we’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to. These six excellent holiday wines have been hand-picked to guide you effortlessly through your Thanksgiving meal.

Introducing our Thanksgiving Six-Pack. Try it — your family will thank you.

thanksgiving-sixpack-blogProsecco Brut NV Col de’ Salici / Veneto
The perfect way to start any celebratory meal, Col de’ Salici’s Valdobbiadene DOC Prosecco is guaranteed to get the party started.

Moscato Giallo 2007 Castel Sallegg / Trentino-Alto Adige
Made from the indigenous golden grape Moscato Giallo, this dry, fragrant wine is an ideal partner to rich cheeses and holiday snacks.

Lambrusco Rosé 2007 Lini / Emilia-Romagna
Lower in alcohol than other Lambruscos, Lini’s gently sparkling Rosé is a tasty choice with which to cleanse the palate between courses.

Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso 2005 Le Ragose / Veneto
Made using the Ripasso method, Le Ragose’s Valpolicella Superiore is a lighter alternative to Amarone and a more suitable pairing to dishes on Thanksgiving’s diverse menu.

Barbera d’Asti Ruleja 2003 Castello di Montegrosso / Piemonte
Ruleja is one of our most popular Barberas – its high acidity makes it a great accompaniment to turkey.

Aviè 2003 Cascina Castlèt / Piemonte
A dessert wine produced from dried Moscato grapes, Avié (meaning “vigil” in Piedmontese) is a memorable way to close a meal. Try it with a slice of pumpkin pie!

Labor Day Weekend Sale!

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Celebrate the end of summer with 20% off fifteen of your favorite wines at Vino!

Even the normally busy streets of Rome are eerily quiet during the month of August.

Summer is drawing to a close, and as Americans prepare for a relaxing Labor Day weekend, in Italy people are finally getting back to work. Italians celebrate Labor Day, or “Festa del Lavoro” on May 1st. So for most Italians August means a long vacation by the sea, an exodus which leaves the usually bustling historic cities the domain of foreign tourists. Not even those in the retail or hospitality businesses deny themselves a seaside break, and during the month of August many stores, restaurants and even newspaper stands close, sometimes for several weeks. Shuttered storefront windows are suddenly plastered with makeshift signs reading chiuso per ferie or “closed for vacation”, often accompanied by a handy date of return.

Signs like this are an all too common sight in the windows of Italian stores and restaurants come mid-August.

Consequently, Italian towns can be sleepy places to be come mid-August, and if you’ve ever visited Italy at this time of year, you’ll know that it can be a frustrating experience, especially when you discover that the must-visit out-of-the-way trattoria recommended in your guide book has decided to shut up shop for two weeks. But at the end of the month, as people return to the city, so too does Italian urban life resume. And while the idea of getting back to real life post-vacation can be a slightly depressing moment, for Italians it is usually tempered by the return of the soccer season!

Italy's premier soccer league Serie A returns this weekend, when Italian champions Inter will begin the defence of their title against Sampdoria.

In celebration of this unique time of year, Vino is offering fifteen of its most popular wines at a spectacular 20% off! It’s the perfect chance to stock up on some of your favorite bottles for a great last days of summer Labor Day weekend!

Check out the Summer Sale page on our website for the full list of wines!

In which Vino pays homage to our medal-winning heroes in Beijing

USA swimmer Michael Phelps won a record eight gold medals in Beijing, beating the seven Olympic golds Mark Spitz's won seven in Munich 1972.

Unless you’ve been living in a self-imposed lunar exile the last two weeks, you’ll probably be more than aware of a little something called the Olympic Games, currently taking place in Beijing. The United States’ athletes have excelled at these games, which will no doubt forever be remembered for Michael Phelps’ record-shattering performances in the water cube.

Jamaica's Usain Bolt comfortably beat Richard Thompson of Trinidad & Tobago to win the 100 meters final in a record 9.69 seconds.

This weekend has seen more spectacular action: from Usain “Lightning” Bolt’s breathtaking victory in the 100 metres final, to more impressive display by the United States’ young gymnasts. Italy has also wone its share of medals, especially in fencing, where the Azzurri have once again dominated.

Italy's Valentina Vezzali (left) and Margherita Granbassi (right) took gold and bronze in the Women's Individual Foil.

This week Vino honors these great olympians with our own selection of champion wines. And don’t forget — Vino will now be hosting its free tastings on Thursday and Friday! For the rest of August, Vino will be pouring five wines each Thursday and Friday, all of which will be available at a special 20% discounted price through Labor Day!

This week’s tasting
Vino will be pouring the following wines this Thursday and Friday afternoon between 5:30 and 7:30pm.

Clic Bianco 2007 Ronco dei Tassi
A great value and perfect “party” wine, this light and tasty wine bursts out of the blocks faster than a Jamaican sprinter. This 100% Friulano is vinified and aged in stainless-steel vats, thus allowing the grape’s noble character to shine through, while retaining a crispness and freshness that make it very approachable and food-friendly. The name “Clic” was inspired by a Friulian dialectal term meaning “a small glass of wine shared with friends.”

Pagliano 2006 Enzo Mecella
While Verdicchio di Castelli di Jesi is perhaps the more noted appellation, Verdicchio sourced from vineyards in the lesser-known Matelica appellation is coveted among Italian wine connoisseurs, not unlike those obscure Olympic disciplines you become hooked on for two weeks in August. Marche producer Enzo Mecella does not use barrique for his Verdicchio and he only releases it when he feels it has achieved his personal best.

Lagrein Rose 2007 Castel Sallegg
The screw-capped Nives is made from the same Lagrein grapes as those sourced for Count Kuenberg’s velvety Lagrein Riserva. The tannic Lagrein gives this wine complexity and structure while the enologist at Castel Sallegg ensures that the wine expresses the pillars of rosato: refreshing, easy-to-drink, adaptable, with all the poise and delicacy of Nastia Liukin on the balance beam.

Chianti Rufina 2006 Travignoli
A true Tuscan great from the subzone of Rufina, considered by many to be produce the most elegant Chianti wines. Chianti Rufina is fermented and aged in steel for eight months, and then spends a further two months in the bottle. Smooth, refined, with a super-toned body, Chianti Rufina has all the hallmarks of an Olympic champion.

Dolcetto d’Alba 2004 Monchiero
Always near the top of Vino’s podium, from one of Piedmont’s most respected Barolo producers comes this Dolcetto d’Alba. Monchiero is one of the few producers in the region which continues to use the most traditional winemaking methods. Its wines continue to set the pace and have a longevity which even 41 year-old swimming silver medallist Dara Torres would struggle to match.

Arrivederci Azzurri

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

All over: The front page of this morning's La Gazzetta dello Sport tells the whole story of Italy's exit from Euro 2008.

Italy’s national soccer team went crashing out of Euro 2008 last night, losing out to Spain 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out, at the end of a closely fought quarter-final in Vienna. The game finished goalless after extra-time, and once again the curse of the dreaded spot-kicks proved to be Italy’s downfall. Spain will now face Russia in the semi-final. Let’s raise a glass to the unlucky Azzurri, and for those of you wishing to drown your sorrows, remember Italy is still Campioni del Mondo!

Mariner Suzuki loves I Trulli

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Major League Baseball star Ichiro Suzuki loves I Trulli, and visits the restaurant every time his Seattle Mariners are in town to face the Mets or Yankees. As the New York Post’s Sunday sports column “The Rumble” reports, the Japanese outfielder’s favorite dishes are the octopus risotto and panna cotta. Stats are inconclusive as to whether dining at I Trulli affects MLB batting averages…
