From the Veneto region, comes Alfonso Soranzo’s 100% Cabernet Franc “Lo Sfuso di Collina” bottled in an unconventional crown cap. Much closer to home is Keuka Lake Vineyard’s Cabernet Franc made by winemaker Ian Barry, who uses grapes grown at Overlook Farms vineyards on the neighboring Seneca Lake. Try both this Friday!

Pinot Noir Gift Pack

Friday, December 16th, 2011

Beguiling, noble, enchanting and often deliciously easy-drinking, Pinot Noir is a favorite of connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike. In Burgundy, its ancestral home, it makes ethereal and earthy wines with firm structure and focused fruit while in California, a warmer climate produces bodacious body and ripe, robust textures and aromas. Our Pinot Noir Gift Pack, featuring the wonderful Givry from Domaine Chofflet-Valdenaire and the fabulous Mendocino Ridge from Arista, offers an elegant and well-priced way to explore this immensely popular variety from two of its essential regions.

And remember: you can taste both Pinot Noirs featured in this Gift Pack tomorrow afternoon from 3:00pm!

The Sazerac is back!

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

Vino’s classic cocktail hour is heading back down to N’awlins this Thursday! You may recall our dalliance with Mint Juleps in the past — this week we’re bringing you the Crescent City’s quintessential cocktail: the Sazerac is back!

The Sazerac is one of the oldest known cocktails; indeed the origins of this drink date back to before Civil War. It is believed to have been created by Antoine Amédée Peychaud in the 1830s, making it (according to some reports) the first cocktail to be invented in America. It was named by John Schiller in 1859 to coincide with the opening of his Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans (both names probably derived from Sazerac-de-Forge et Fils, a popular brand of Cognac).

Women clamoring for Sazerac’s at the Sazerac Bar in the Roosevelt Hotel, New Orleans, 1949.

Peychaud’s Sazerac was essentially a combination of Cognac and bitters, although the recipe has continued to evolve over the years. Various versions still abound today, but the modern Sazerac is invariably made using rye whiskey, Peychaud’s bitters, and absinthe or pastis. In 2008 it was declared by the Louisiana State Senate as the official cocktail of New Orleans.

Blood Orange Bloody Mary

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

It’s tomato season, so what better cocktail to serve than Bloody Mary? As is the Vino tradition, we’re giving this classic drink a twist — of orange that is! We’ll be using Charbay Blood Orange Vodka!

This elixir of life hails from sunny California, where its produced in Napa by Marko Karakasevic. As spirits writer Chris Carlsson notes, with “thirteen generations of distillers, the Karakasevic Family have a line longer than the Beams (the only other family to come close).” Karakasevic starts with 100% organic oranges and then works hard to extract all the flavor and color (a process which takes nearly six months). This extract is then blended with Charbay’s signature vodka.

Come try this tasty concoction this Thursday! And don’t forget: I Trulli is celebrating La Festa del Pomodoro through the month of August!
