Back to school: classes return for Fall

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

It may still be pushing the high-nineties in New York, but believe it or not Fall is almost upon us! Vino’s wine and spirit classes return this September with a fresh autumnal schedule. Our selection has gone international and so have our classes: this semester’s tasting seminars are a reflection of our expanding blend of world-class wines and spirits from around the globe. But we’re starting things off with a return to our roots, as next Tuesday we present The Wines of Italy!

Before embarking on our international expansion earlier this year, we spent the best part of a decade dealing in Italian wine. All that tasting, talking and, uh, tasting some more, had to pay off in the end: the result is The Wines of Italy. Hosted by Vino’s resident Italian wine maven Jim Hutchinson, this intrepid tour of the peninsula will take in Italy’s vast mosaic of appellations, countless grape varieties, and myriad countless winemaking styles. Participants will be treated to an exclusive tasting representative of Italian wine’s remarkable quality and diversity, and learn more about the ever-shifting landscape of Italy’s richly entertaining winemaking culture.

This class introduces some of France’s best known exports: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Participants will taste representations of these grapes as they manifest themselves in some of their finest growing regions. In this two hour seminar, Vino’s spirits specialist Scott Rosenbaum will recount the colorful history behind such hallmarks as the Martini, Manhattan, Daiquiri, and Sidecar. He’ll then shake ‘em up as he discusses the finer points regarding the importance of fresh juice, good ice, and proper barware. Participants will have a chance to mix their favorite cocktail of the evening. Prepare to be shaken and stirred!

Blind Tasting

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Within the professional wine world, a blind tasting is seen by many as the ultimate test of a wine’s worthiness. External information, such as the cork, labels, price, even the bottle’s shape — factors which may sway a taster’s judgment — are hidden, leaving us with the purest sensory tasting experience. While a useful technique for creating a more honest comparison, a blind tasting is also a fascinating revelation as to the extent in which context and preconceptions can affect our perception of wine.

Six Grape Varieties You’ve Never Heard Of

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

At Vino we’ve always had a knack for stumbling upon the next big thing. Our intrepid and inexhaustible probing of some of Italy’s most typical regional wines has led to the unlikely transformation of some of its most obscure grape varieties becoming household names among New York’s adventurous wine drinkers.

Our recent international expansion has given us even more scope to introduce you some of the world’s lesser known wines. Cesanese, Monastrell, Teroldego, Falanghina: if you’ve never heard of these grape varieties do not despair, until a few years ago nobody knew Malbec either. Join us at Vino for an evening of exploration. You may end up leaving with a brand new favorite.

Spring classes are back: Wines of Tuscany, April 21

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Tuscany. Say it. “Tuscany.” I’ve seen grown adults go weak at the knees with the very mention of the word. That’s because nowhere evokes the magic of Italy more than this famed region: its rolling hills, picturesque towns and stunning artistic heritage have captivated for centuries and continue to attract millions of visitors every year. So familiar is Tuscany — and its celebrated wines — that in recent years wine enthusiasts in this country have begun to pass up a Brunello or a Vino Nobile in favor of something new. While we love Tuscany’s classic appellations, we also strongly promote the discovery of Italy’s lesser-known wines. This exclusive tasting class will remind you there is much more to Tuscan wine than the cliché of the straw Chianti flask on a checkered tablecloth. From the famous Sangiovese-based appellations to the law-bending Super Tuscans and an array of top-flight whites, Tuscany is home to some of the world’s finest wines. Taste some of our favorites with Vino’s Jim Hutchinson!

Blind Date: March 17

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

As wine lovers we like to feel in complete control of our sensory judgment, yet it’s easy (even for wine professionals) to underestimate just how many factors can determine our appreciation of a wine.

For many, a blind tasting is often seen as the ultimate test of a wine’s true worth. External information such as labels, price, even the bottle’s shape or cork — elements which may sway the taster — are hidden, leaving us with the purest possible tasting experience.

While a useful technique for encouraging a more honest comparison, a blind tasting can also be a fascinating revelation as to the extent in which context and preconceptions can affect our perception of a wine.

Class participants will taste six wines and be asked to answer questions on each based solely on their sensory observations. This unique “blind date” is guaranteed to be an eye-opener… don’t miss out!

Wines of Piemonte

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Whether it be an ageworthy Barolo, a distinguished Barbaresco, or a tough but sprightly Gattinara, Piedmont can lay claim to some of the world’s most revered wines from some of the country’s most esteemed wineries. While Nebbiolo is Piedmont’s undisputed champion variety, Dolcetto and Barbera play a greater role in the daily lives of most piemontesi. On March 10 sample some of this mighty winemaking region’s most representative product, including wines made from lesser-known varieties such as Erbaluce, Pelaverga, Grignolino and Ruchè.

Start your engines…

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Time to fill up the cinquecento and slip on the driving moccasins as Vino takes you on a virtual tasting trip through Italy’s south, along the A16 highway. Often referred to as the “autostrada dei due mari”, the A16 journeys almost coast-to-coast across the width of the peninsula, from the bay of Naples to the Adriatic, up over the spine of the Appenines before grinding to a halt in the town of Canosa in the province of Bari. This famous highway cuts deep through wine country, roughly following the ancient Via Traiana across highlands of limestone and volcanic ash. This scenic wine tour will make scheduled pit-stops to sample some of southern Italy’s most celebrated grape varieties, including Falanghina, Fiano, Aglianico, Primitivo and Nero di Troia.

Nebbiolo class — this Wednesday

Monday, November 9th, 2009

nebbiolo blog

Famed the world over for its use in two of Italy’s most celebrated wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, young Nebbiolo is naturally high in tannins and thus at its best offers a remarkable potential for aging. Yet many forget that the variety actually goes far beyond these highly revered DOCGs, featuring in wines from some of Piedmont’s lesser-known winemaking zones, including Ghemme and Carema in the northern hills of the region. Though most closely associated with Piedmont, Nebbiolo is also cultivated in Lombardy where it’s known as Chiavennasca, and is the predominant variety in Valtellina.

A man who has worked the vines with his bare hands under Piedmont’s baking sun, few people know Nebbiolo like Jim Hutchinson, DWS (below: front row, far right). Join Jim tomorrow evening as as he guides you through this impressive exclusive tasting of some of his favorite expressions of this much-admired and unexpectedly diverse variety. Sign up now!

wine cheese blog

Much like the country’s wine, cheese is produced in every region of Italy, and for Italians invariably plays an integral part in their daily diet. While it is an essential ingredient in many regional dishes, it is also common in Italy to enjoy cheese by itself, or at the very most, paired with a glass of local wine.

Vino’s Jim Hutchinson has devoted the best part of his life to the study of Italian food and wine; join him on Wednesday for a tasting of six diverse formaggi from six of Italy’s greatest cheese-producing regions. Each cheese will be paired with a special wine selected by Jim’s expert hand.
