Nicola Marzovilla presents “Massoferrato”, Monday, November 16

massoferrato blog

Join Nicola Marzovilla for a very special dinner celebrating all the rustic charm of Tuscany, as the I Trulli owner proudly presents Massoferrato, the first wine made from grapes grown on his Tuscan estate!

Marzovilla and his family purchased the property (above) in Impruneta in the Colli Fiorentini, south of Florence, fifteen years ago, with a view to trying their hand at winemaking. Nicola planted seven acres of Sangiovese (below) — the classic Tuscan variety — which in 2008 produced fruit for the very first vintage of Massoferrato. The wine, classified Rosso Toscano IGT, was fermented in stainless steel before spending time in custom-made 20 hectoliter barrels of Slavonian oak.

A wine this special deserves a menu to match, and for this unique occasion Chef Patti Jackson will prepare typically Tuscan dishes including chestnut gnocchi and whole roasted wild boar. Check out Patti’s full menu here!

New York City’s favorite* Italian wine blog joins fastest-growing internet phenomenon

twitter-logo blogI am all a-twitter today as I have just signed up for the hugely popular virtual update service, known by most simply as Twitter. I shall be “tweeting” (if I remember) whenever I have something exciting to say about new wines, special events or anything else relating to the world of Vino. Several of my friends annoy me constantly with their Twitter updates, but unlike them I shall not be tweeting while standing on line at Wholefoods or absentmindedly while watching Seinfeld reruns. As the nature of this post may suggest, I am still undecided as to whether Twitter represents the future of wine marketing or simply the death of modern society as we know it. Either way please follow me.

Discovering Calabria

Taste four of our favorite wines from this southern region of Italy, this Friday at Vino!

Discover Calabria blog

This Friday Vino invites you to discover the region of Calabria, as we pour four of our favorite calabrese wines in a special tasting for DISCOVERING CALABRIA. The event is part of a shop and dine promotional campaign organized by the Italian Trade Commission, in partnership with Regione Calabria, to educate and inform food and wine lovers about the delicious specialties from this region in southern Italy.

Though not particularly famous for its wine production, Calabria currently devotes nearly 60,000 acres to grapevines, and includes 12 DOC appellations, 13 IGT appellations, and almost three-dozen major and secondary grape varieties. About 91% of Calabria’s wine production is red or rosé, with a large portion made from the indigenous Gaglioppo grape. However, Calabria’s DOCs also produce exquisitely delicate whites, as well as a few sparkling, dessert and fortified wines. Chief among these appellations is Cirò which according to local legend, is the oldest continuously made wine in the world, dating back over 2,500 years.

Join us on Friday, June 19, when we’ll be pouring some of our favorite wines from Calabria:

Scavigna Pian della Corte 2007 Odoardi

Cirò Duca San Felice 2005 Librandi

Melissa Mutrò 2004 Cantina Val di Neto Cirò

Ronco dei Quattroventi 2005 Fattoria San Francesco

Visit italianmade.com for further information on Calabria. The following promotional clip for Regione Calabria stars Milan’s World Cup-winning soccer star Gennaro “Ringhio” Gattuso, a true calabrese if ever there was one. Famed for his passionate aggression on the field and good humor off it, Gattuso’s nickname derives from the verb ringhiare (“to growl/snarl”).

CANCELED: Spring Garden Party tonight

Tonight’s outdoor tasting event succumbs to wet weather

rain

We are sorry to announce the cancellation of this week’s Spring Garden Party at I Trulli tonight due to unseasonally wet weather.

As you may have noticed, the weather in New York is more than a little damp and overcast today, and the forecast promises only thunderstorms and a 60% chance of precipitation in the early evening. So we’ve reluctantly decided to wait until next week for another great outdoor tasting event in I Trulli’s gorgeous back garden.

Be sure to join us next Tuesday, June 16 when we’ll be pouring five terrific wines from five different regions of Italy’s south. Taste these diverse expressions of southern Italy with Chef Patti Jackson’s delicious spread of seasonal antipasti. Hopefully more seasonal June weather will also be joining us!

The journey wine takes on its way from vineyard to bottle to dinner table is long and winding: when we sit down to open a bottle it’s sometimes easy to forget about the men and women far away whose talent and hard work has somehow directly led to the delicious enhancement of your meal. So naturally, when the chance arises to meet our favorite winemakers it’s a huge thrill. This week, we’re delighted to welcome to the Big Apple one of our youngest and most popular producers, Luca Ferraris.

Since their introduction last year, Luca’s line of varietals have proven a massive success with all those in search of affordable wines from Piedmont made in a classic style. Ferraris specializes in local varieties indigenous to the piemontese province of Asti and its surroundings. As Vino customers have discovered, Luca’s Barbera d’Asti, Grignolino d’Asti and the emerging Ruchè, made from a grape grown solely in the hamlet of Castagnole Monferrato, offer some of our best values. This year we’re excited to introduce a new addition to the Ferraris range: Il Re is a rare blend of Ruchè and Syrah.

Luca Ferraris will be bringing with him the 2008 vintages of his wines, which he’ll be pouring at Vino next Wednesday, May 13th from 5:30pm. For more information call 212-725-6516 or email contact@vinosite.com.
