I Spirit: The Original Italian Vodka
Friday, September 30th, 2011
Italian vodka might seem about as likely as Russian pizza, but if you think about it, the two aren’t such an improbable pairing. I Spirit has successfully married the pure sophistication of high-quality vodka with the style-driven lifestyle for which Italy is known. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the fact that the product is the result of an unexpected collaboration between Harry’s Bar owner Arrigo Cipriani, entrepreneur and Agnelli heir Lapo Elkann and spirit distillers Marco Fantinel and Francesco Cosulich.
Made in the town of Spilimbergo, north-east of Venice in the province of Pordenone, this delicate vodka is made from the finest grains and selected white wines from Friuli, a region celebrated for its superb winemaking heritage. The spirit is distilled five times and reaches a 40% alcohol level thanks to the addition of crystalline water from the Dolomites. I Spirit Vodka was launched in Venice just two years ago and — with Cesare Martini as U.S. brand manager — has since become a hit in the United States. I Spirit’s U.S. representatives will be at Vino this Thursday to present this versatile vodka: what better way to start the weekend… Italian style!

Cardamaro cocktail hour
Sunday, September 18th, 2011
Although it’s true that no two amari are alike, Cardamaro from Piemonte is definitely one of the most interesting. Producer Giovanni Bosca uses wine from his estate as the base for this amaro. He then infuses the wine with two very curious ingredients – cardoon, which is a relative of the artichoke, and Blessed Thistle, which was once used in the middle ages to treat the bubonic plague. The distillate then rests in new oak for at least six months. The resulting spirit is less bitter than many amari, with a smooth, nutty, candied winter spice quality to it. We’ll be concocting our own cardoon cocktail this Thursday!

Blood Orange Bloody Mary
Sunday, August 14th, 2011
It’s tomato season, so what better cocktail to serve than Bloody Mary? As is the Vino tradition, we’re giving this classic drink a twist — of orange that is! We’ll be using Charbay Blood Orange Vodka!
This elixir of life hails from sunny California, where its produced in Napa by Marko Karakasevic. As spirits writer Chris Carlsson notes, with “thirteen generations of distillers, the Karakasevic Family have a line longer than the Beams (the only other family to come close).” Karakasevic starts with 100% organic oranges and then works hard to extract all the flavor and color (a process which takes nearly six months). This extract is then blended with Charbay’s signature vodka.
Come try this tasty concoction this Thursday! And don’t forget: I Trulli is celebrating La Festa del Pomodoro through the month of August!

Keeping It Local
Sunday, July 17th, 2011
Vino is keeping it local this weekend, with three free New York-themed tastings, each featuring products that are 100% home-grown! On Thursday our cocktail hour will feature the Brooklyn John Collins, for which we’ll be putting Brooklyn’s own Kings County Distillery’s Bourbon to good use. On Friday we’ll be pouring the wines of Channing Daughters, a winery on the South Fork of Long Island, where adventurous winemaker Christopher Tracy produces unconventional interpretations of classic European varieties. Saturday is the turn of Keuka Lake Vineyards, as we showcase two of our newest wines from the Finger Lakes: a dry Riesling and a Cabernet Franc. Support your local winemaker!

Aperol + Lambrusco = Correggio Spritz!
Saturday, July 2nd, 2011
Aperol is Italy’s best-selling spirit, and the base for one of its most popular cocktails, the Aperol Spritz. We love this orange-tinged aperitivo but couldn’t resist replacing Prosecco with our favorite sparkling wine, Lambrusco! The spectacular result is the Correggio Spritz, combining Aperol and Lambrusco Rosé In Correggio by LINI 910. Try it this Thursday!
