Luca Ferraris "Vigna del Casot" Grignolino D'Asti 2009 (Piedmont, Italy)

    Regular Price: $18.00

    Special Price: $10.00

Grignolino is a grape variety which has long been grown in Piedmont, though the Grignolino d’Asti DOC is often overshadowed by some of the region’s more famous denominations. Its name comes from “grignole“, which in local dialect refers to the unusual abundance of seeds inside the grapes. What was once an abundant variety, Grignolino cultivation suffered especially when a plague of vine destroying parasites swept through the region. As a result, production is limited, a problem which has served to only enhance the wines’ appeal. The variety is being resurrected by fine young producers such as Luca Ferraris, whose Grignolino d’Asti comes from his “Vigna del Casot“, a single vineyard in Castagnole Monferrato. This wine comes form a single vineyard and is vinified in stainless steel. Learn More

    Price: $12.00

The 12-Century Quinta still stands and attached to it is modern winery that allows the estate great control over the winemaking process.

Made from indigenous Loureiro and Pedernã (aka Arinto), this vintage Vinho Verde, captures the essence of the appellation with its zippy acidity and lime character. Following stalk-removal and soft crushing to remove the skins, the must, protected from oxidation by using inert gas, went through a period of static decanting at low temperatures. For the Pedernã variety, this process took longer until the required level of clarity was achieved. The must was then taken to stainless steel, temperature-controlled fermentation vats, where it fermented for about 15 days at 60°F. One of the best choices for Summer drinking, this Vinho Verde does not disappoint. Learn More

Louison's large, modern wine cellar is equipped with temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks. The partially-subterranean cellar has 250 barrels, 30 of which are replaced annually. The oak barrels come from central France, and he only uses coopers who air-dry the wood for at least 24 months. This gives, he explains, the tannin in the wine the proper balance and structure.
