Wine Education: Discover the Marlborough Wine Region

It’s known as Marlborough, and seventy-five percent of the country’s wine production comes from this area. Marlborough is home to 650 harvesters, 150 wineries, and over 2.3 million acres of planted grapes, and its claim to fame is producing the world’s finest Sauvignon Blanc. Though it also produces well-respected Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling.

Situated at the northeastern tip of South Island, is New Zealand’s largest wine growing region.

What Makes Marlborough’s Wines So Delicious?

Marlborough’s valleys were created millions of years ago by a large glacier. This region’s main center, Blenheim, experiences a sunny, warm climate that’s cooled by winds from the Pacific Ocean. Slightly to the southeast sits the Awatere Valley, where the climate is cooler as it’s close to the ocean on the eastern and northern sides.

Sea breezes play a key role in the Marlborough region, as does a sunny, dry autumn. This gives the grapes a long growing season, which allows them to fully develop without losing their characteristic acidity.

Marlborough Wine & Food Festival

If you wish to take a trip to this area, consider visiting in February during the annual Marlborough Wine and Food Festival. In 2017, it will take place on February 11, and will include live bands, cheese and wine master classes, and cooking demonstrations.

We hope you enjoyed today’s wine education. If you would like to try some of this region’s wines without having to take a long, expensive flight, please contact us. We carry Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, and we’ll be glad to help you choose the perfect one to complement your meal.
