How to Choose a Wine When Serving Chicken

Chicken can be prepared in so many different ways, but no matter what, there's always a wine for the occasion. Here are the best ways to pair chicken and wine.

Light Chicken

Light chicken dishes, such as chicken with a creamy sauce, cheesy chicken or light chicken salad go well with white wines. You can try oaked or smooth and dry white wines, such as Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. If you're serving your chicken with a lot of earthy vegetables and greens such as squash, try something like an Amontillado Sherry.

Spicy Chicken

White wines also work well with chicken dishes with a lot of spices and flavorings, including sweet and sour chicken and fried chicken dishes. You can try aromatic white wines such as a Veltliner or a Riesling. A Sauvignon Blanc would be fine as well.

Rich Chicken Dishes

Rich chicken dishes allow for richer, red wines. For example, chicken with barbecue sauce or lots of tomato sauce would work well with a Pinot Noir, a Zinfandel or a Merlot. Rose wines are great too. If you have smoked BBQ chicken, try a Malbec.

Simple Chicken

Simple chicken, such as baked, grilled or roasted chicken, would work well with white and red wines, depending on your taste. Try a Pinot Noir or a Chardonnay. A Burgundy, both red and white, will go well with just about any chicken out there, as will a Veltliner. You can also try a Meursault.
